Data breaches, customer information theft, and ransomware attacks are what keep our clients up at night. Retailmatics understands the importance of data security to the retailer’s survival. No other industry is as attractive to hackers, as is retailing.

The reason is easy to understand. The merchant’s database is chock full of information that can be easily exploited once obtained. Credit card data and personal information provide dozens of ways to make illicit profits.

Computer savvy thieves never stop finding new ways to extract cash from their “profession”. If a hacker finds no information of value, they merely play the “if I can’t have it, neither will you” game. Once breached, an organization’s data can be held for ransom. The victim is given a period of time to comply with the blackmail threat, after which their data will most likely be permanently destroyed. We have seen cases where ransomware attacks have taken months to resolve.

With constantly emerging techniques to penetrate and exploit a system, it is no wonder so many retailers are losing sleep.

With that in mind, we have established our own Managed Security Service, powered by the software of security specialists AlienVault. Using AlienVaults SIEM tools and our certified security analysts, your environment is continuously monitored for any malevolent activity or behaviors.

Using our service, you can have the same type of data protection available to Tier 1 retailers, without the need for dedicated staff, and at a much lower cost. Here are some of the features of our service.

Protecting your data assets is a challenge. It requires dedicated, trained staff. Your environment is constantly changing - new users, new hardware, new software, mean new vulnerabilities are always a concern. In addition, there are always new techniques employed by "black hats". A security service requires next to no capital costs, no investment in software or in personnel. We are your eyes in the sky.
Statistics clearly reveal that when it comes to data hacking, retailers seem to have the spotlight cast on them. And not in a good way. Retailers seem to have more to offer data thieves, than most other industries, probably because they maintain so much information on so many individuals. Also because their data is not always maintained locally, but moving between remote locations, there are so many more devices/nodes to protect. With over 40 years in retail technology, we understand where the vulnerabilities may lie, what is most sensitive, and what the data security priorities are.
Cyber security is a complex task. There is an ever growing library of viruses and malware. A number of different ways to breach or hack a system. No one software tool can expose or detect them all. Retailmatics uses a set of professional tools, each intended for a specific problem. End-point Protection, Phishing Simulation and vulnerability scans are just 3 of the ways we protect your assets.
One of the very first things that needs to be performed, is an assessment of your environment. We evaluate security risks in your network, and where you might be most vulnerable to attack. We report on these issues,, and will guide you in locking them down, so that you're environment is more secure .
The biggest concern amongst the retailers we speak to, is by far, ransomware. THese attacks do not attempt to steal your data, they merely hold them hostage for a fee. Once inside your system (usually via a phishing scam), the thieves will encrypt your data. It becomes unreadable, but in most cases, reversible. The Thieves will offer to return your systems to their original state, once a payment has been made. Very often the data will become permanently deleted if demands are not met. Paying the ransom fee does not always result in the encryption reversal, nor does it guarantee no further ransome attempts in the future.
Our analysts have been trained in the use of AlienVault’s security tools, and have dozens of years of experience in the data security field. The security tools we use (including SIEM) produce constant alarms. Much of it may just be "noise", that we can filter out. Knowing what the real concerns are, versus false positives, is a large part of the skill of security engineers. Once aa valid alarm is triggered, it takes skill and experience to know where the incident occurred, and how to correct it.
